The Mains examination evaluates overall intellectual traits rather than mere information recall. General Studies papers test general awareness relevant to civil services careers, requiring analysis of conflicting socio-economic issues. Optional subject papers are at honors degree level. All papers except qualifying language papers can be answered in any Eighth Schedule language or English. Each paper is 3 hours duration with conventional essay format.
